Big plays were
difference maker as the Perryton Rangers fell to the Dumas Demons
Friday night in Dumas to open to 2010 season. The Ranger offense,
with only one returning starter in the backfield, struggled early
failing to get a first down on their first 3 series. By then, the
Demons had opened up a 14 point lead on a 43 yard passing play from
Clayton baker to Adres Baskin and a two yard Baskin run.
The Ranger offense finally clicked late in the first quarter with a
drive that carried over into the second quarter, kept alive by a big
roughing the kicker penalty. When the drive stalled out on the Demon
13, Miguel Carnero put the Rangers on the board with a 30 yard field
goal.
After a defensive stop by the Rangers, Zach Allred led his team down
the field to the Demon 31 where Kade Keeth broke loose for the first
Perryton touchdown of the year. With the Carnero kick, the Red Team
had closed to within 4.
Keeth intercepted a Demon pass on the next play. However, Baskin
return the favor minutes later and the Demons drove to the Ranger 20
before having to settle for a field goal as time ran out on the half
with the score Dumas 17 Perryton 10.
Dumas had a big return on the second half kickoff, but it was all
called back on penalty. On the next snap though, Mason Brey broke
the biggest play of the game, an 82 yard touchdown run to but the
Demons back up by two touchdowns.
With five and half minutes left in the third, Blake Turner took a
turn at QB and led the Rangers to the Demon 23. From there Turner
found Chance Baize in the end zone and the Rangers were back in
striking distance at 24-17.
Four plays later Turner intercepted Baker at the Ranger 34. Once
again, though momentum immediately shifted back to the guys in
orange as a bobbled pitch out was scooped up by Damien Trejo of the
Demons as flew to the end zone making it 31-17, Dumas in the final
minute of the third quarter.
An interception early in the fourth led to another Baskin touchdown
as Dumas put the game out of reach with a final score of 38-17.
The Rangers will have their home opener, the homecoming game, Friday
night as they host the Bushland Falcons fresh off a big win over
Stratford, 30-14. If you can’t make it to the game, you can hear it
where you’ve heard the Rangers since 1948, on AM1400 KEYE.
